Mixed U.S. unemployment numbers and growing concern that Greece’s debt crisis will extend to Portugal and Spain resulted in a volatile week on equity markets. Overall, markets ended the week down due mainly to a plunge on Thursday on news that the number of jobless claims for the week unexpectedly rose. However, markets pulled back slightly on Friday when the Labor Department reported that unemployment edged down to 9.7 percent in January from a readjusted 10 percent for December.
